《14》Hakata Dontaku Port Festival (Part 3)...Sad Anecdotes in the History of the Festival
- The Hakata Matsuhayashi Festival has a long history, but it also has sad episodes. According to "Sekijoushi" a local journal of Hakata in the Edo period, in 1599, a samurai riding on horseback on an errand for his lord clashed with a group of Matsuhayashi musicians, and the merchant killed the samurai.
- At that time, a ronin, who had nothing to do with the incident, came forward to take the place of the murderer, who was a merchant. The ronin had been living off the mercy of the merchant and thought it was time to return the favor.The ronin thought it was time to return the favor. He said, "Take care of my old mother," turned himself in, and was executed. It' s said that this is the reason why Matsuhayashi was able to continue.
- Despite this sad anecdote, Hakata Matsubayashi continued as a New Year's pine festival until the Meiji era. Hakata Matsubayashi was once stopped during the Meiji era, but was later resumed and called "Hakata Dontaku" after the Dutch word "zondag" (holiday).
- Later, Hakata Dontaku was revived in 1946, when the city of Hakata was burnt to the ground in the war, with hopes of recovery, and has been held every year as the Hakata Dontaku Port Festival, a recreational event that Fukuoka citizens can all enjoy. /
博多どんたく港まつり（その３）…祭りの歴史の中に悲しい逸話も
- 長い歴史を持つ博多松囃子には、悲しいエピソードも残っています。江戸時代の博多地誌『石城志』によると、1599 (慶長4)年、殿様の使いで馬に乗っていた侍と松囃子の一団が衝突し、町人が侍を殺してしまうという事件が起きました。
- このとき、事件とは関係のない1人の浪人が、町人であった下手人の身代わりに名乗り出ました。浪人は、町民の情けのおかげで生活しており、その恩を返すときが来たと思ったのでした。「老母を頼む」と言い残して自首し、処刑されたため、松囃子が存続できたといいます。
- このような悲しい逸話も残る博多松囃子ですが、明治になるまで松囃子は正月松の内の行事として続いてきました。博多松囃子は明治時代に一度中止されたものの、その後再開されて、オランダ語の「ゾンターク」(休日)にちなんだ「博多どんたく」と呼ばれるようになりました。
- その後、博多どんたくは博多の町が戦争で焼け野原だった1946 年 に復興の期待を込めて復活し、やがて福岡市民がこぞって楽しめるレクリエーション「博多どんたく港まつり」として毎年行われています。
