《9》Hakata Gion Yamakasa (Part.2)...It all started with Shouichi Kokushi's efforts to stop the plague

- There are many theories about the origin of Hakata Gion Yamakasa. One of the most widely held theories is that it started in 1241 during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), when the founder of Jotenji Temple (Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City), Shouichi Kokushi, is said to have stopped a plague.

- In that year, an epidemic broke out in Hakata, and when the townspeople asked for help, Shouichi Kokushi rode around the town on a portable shrine (a palanquin for carrying people), sprinkled nectar water (holy water) and prayed fervently. The origin of the story is that the plague stopped.

- It is said that in the beginning of summer, each town assembled Yamakasa, decorated it with dolls and other lucky charms, and carried it around. /
