《24》Medieval Hakata: Mystery of Sode-no-Minato (Part 2)...Consideration of Sode-no-Minato by Kaibara Ekiken
- In "Kyushumichinoki" written by Kinoshita Katsutoshi, a warlord who visited Hakata in 1592 at the end of the Warring States period, it is written, "Where is the port that was exaggeratedly called Sode-no-minato now? From this, it seems that the Sode-no-Minato was nowhere to be found in Hakata, at least at that time. Where in the world was this Sode-no-Minato? This is what is known as the "mystery of Sode-no-Minato".
- In the Edo period (1603-1867), there was once a large ditch called "Hakata Dai Suido" running east-west through the city of Hakata, which was said to be the site of Sode-no-Minato.
- Kaibara Ekiken(1630-1714), a great scholar of the Kuroda Clan, wrote in his books "Chikuzennokunizokufudoki" and "Chikuzennayose" that "in olden times, there was an inland sea running east-west through the town of Hakata, which was called Sode-no-Minato because its shape resembled the sleeves of kimono, and trade with China was actively conducted there.” Since then, most of the local histories have followed this theory of Kaibara Ekiken. /
中世博多-袖の湊のなぞ（その２）…貝原益軒の袖の湊の考察
- 戦国時代末期の1592年に博多を訪れた武将である木下勝俊の『九州道之記』には「袖の湊と、大げさに言われた港はいまどこにあるのか」と記されており、少なくともこのころには袖の湊の面影は博多の街のどこにもなかったようです。いったい袖の湊はどこにあったのでしょうか。これが「袖の湊のなぞ」といわれるものです。
- 江戸時代には、かつて博多の街を東西に流れる「博多大水道」と呼ばれる大きな溝があり、それが袖の湊の跡地ではないかと言われていたことがあります。
- 黒田藩の大学者である貝原益軒（1630年～1714年）はその著書『筑前国続風土記』や『筑前名寄』の中で、「昔、博多の町を東西に貫通する入海があり、その形が袖に似ているので袖の湊と称され、中国との貿易が盛んに行われていた」という趣旨の記述を残しています。それ以後の地誌類には、ほとんどこの貝原益軒の説が踏襲されていました。
