《3》Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (Part 3)...The Beginning and Reconstruction of this Shrine

-In 903, the body of Sugawara no Michizane was carried in an ox cart by his disciple, Umasaka Yasuyuki, and was buried where the oxen had stopped walking. Two years later, the Umasaka clan built a shrine at the burial site, which was the beginning of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

-Seven hundred years later, in 1591, after several conflagrations, it was rebuilt by the warlord Kobayakawa Takakage. The building is in the grand and splendid style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, with a flying plum tree on the right and an empress plum tree on the left.

-Today, the building with its flowing gables is designated as an important cultural property of Japan. The tomb of Sugawara no Michizane is located under the floor of the main shrine and is a sanctuary that only successive generations of priests who are descendants of Michizane can enter. /
