《44》Medieval Hakata - Japan-Ming trade (the tally trade) (Part 5) ... Medieval Hakata and Autonomous City
- It is not widely known that medieval Hakata was an autonomous city with strong autonomy, enjoying freedom and prosperity. Although the time period is quite far back, there are descriptions of Hakata reminiscent of a medieval autonomous city in foreign historical documents.
- Luis Frois, a Portuguese missionary who came to Japan in 1563, wrote about Hakata in his book " Nihonshi ( Historia de Japam)": "There was no city in Kyushu at that time so rich as Hakata. It was all a national organization built on merchants, as was Senshu Sakai."
- This description suggests that Hakata, like Sakai, was under the control of a council of influential merchants (Nengyoji). In other words, Hakata also formed a kind of self-governing city and its civic power was very strong.
